Conventional and digital microscopy – Developing cell conceptual competences using the example of human biology
Projektdauer:
28.02.13 bis 31.12.14
Kurzinhalt:
[Kurzinhalt - Fremdsprache] Students in elementary biology classes are fascinated by microscopy. In higher classes, microscopy is hardly done. Microscopic drawing is frowned upon. School graduates are challenged by the complexity of concrete configurations and have little practice. This study was done with the goal of researching various measures to promote the development of microscopy competences at school. By tracking eye movement, it was examined how problem-oriented impulses help high school students recognise complex cellular configurations in human biological tissue like the retina. The main survey was done with 29 high school seniors using microscopes at the student laboratory of neuroscience. The data shows that prior knowledge of cellular configurations of the eye does not influence the number of saccades and fixations at this level. The qualitative analysis of the scanpath of histological images, however, allows conclusions about concrete cognitive aspects of attentive image comprehension.
Most biology teacher trainees perceive themselves as having average microscopy skills. Thus, this study examines the development of competences of these students during microscopy of human biological contents (2012 n=70; 2013: 25 14; 2013/14 n=21 27, 2014 n=40). Treatments with conventional microscopy and with self-developed modules for interactive whiteboards with a touch function for histological images are compared: interests, situational interest, experience of competence, ratio of matching requirement, and flow experience. Competences in interpretation of microscopic images of both treatments were additionally tested. The data show: The positive values of interest and ratio of matching requirement of conventional microscopy using problem-based learning are not surpassed by learning with digital images. When initial technical problems have been overcome, digital images can achieve similar effects to conventional images, in a collaborative approach. The ratio of matching requirement is crucial for successful microscopy (conventional or digital). This is ensured through problem-oriented didactic contextualisation, development of prior knowledge, and communication with feedback.
Ergebnis:
