Abstract
The article addresses love relationships in the context of "intellectual disability" and problematizes the fact that love plays nearly no role in the curative education discourse on the pair of terms sexualitiy and "intellectual disability". The starting point is the observation that love in the academic context is understood as an aspect of sexuality, which means that the social dimension of love and partnership relationsships is lost from view. Against this background, the article uses a case study and draws on sociological systems theory to shed light on the social function of love. It is shown that love relationships have a social complexity that cannot be adequately captured by a broad understanding of sexuality. Two central insights are derived from this: firstly, that a distinction should be made between the code of love and loving as a communicative process in order to understand the challenges of partnership interaction; socondly, that what is meant when talking about "love" should primarily be seen as a matter that lies in communication and therefore 'outside' the human being. The article argues that this systems theory perspective should be included into curative education reflctions in order to professionally meet the communicative challenges of accompanying people with "intellectual disability" in 'matters of love'.
